Speaking with VOA Urdu Professor John Briscoe, an expert in water management from Harvard University says, the primary cause for the recent floods in Pakistan is due to the natural flow of water. He suggests a possible solution is to develop smart water management systems and to work closely with local communities in the flood prone areas to inform them about the status of the flood water and its potential flow so precautionary measures can be taken to avoid a major loss of life and property. He gave a comparative analysis between the great Mississippi flood in the U.S in 1927 and the recent U.S floods in 2010, where the loss of live was minimal due to the creative strategies developed and implemented by the U.S army core of engineers ​
